COSTA ANNOUNCES $220,000 RECYCLING GRANT FOR PITTSBURGH

HARRISBURG, June 11, 2008
– Sen. Jay Costa (D-Allegheny) today announced a $220,000 state grant to the city of Pittsburgh for its recent recycling efforts.

The grant is based on the over 19,000 tons of material the city recycled in 2006.
“We have been trying hard to recycle more and more in Allegheny County,” Costa said. “Not only does recycling help our environment, but it also generates more money for the city.”

The grant was awarded from the state’s Recycling Performance Grant Program.
The grant program is intended to give incentives to communities to promote recycling and increase economic growth of the state through increased job opportunities and market expansion.

Costa said the grant will supplement other funds the state Department of Environmental Protection allocates to municipalities in order to establish and maintain recycling programs.

“I will continue to seek state support for local recycling efforts,” Costa said.
